What Is the IDG and Its Cooling System?

An IDG, more formally known as an Integrated Drive Generator, is a type of power system commonly implemented within aircraft for the means of governing all engine hydraulic systems. In general, such assemblies consist of a single housing which contains a Constant Speed Drive (CSD) and an AC generator mounted in parallel. With the controlled differential capabilities of the CSD, a consistent output speed can be maintained for driving the AC generator. With this process, many key components of the aircraft are provided the energy necessary for their functionality. As a result, it is crucial that operators maintain their IDG for optimal flight operations.

As the generator produces energy for powering various components, it is important that there is ample oil for lubrication and cooling. The oil cooling system of an IDG will typically include a self-contained oil circuit and a fuel and oil heat exchanger. With the addition of a scavenge pump, oil can be transported through the oil filter and heat exchanger. Alongside cooling and lubrication, oil is also paramount for the proper functionality of the CSD as it is used to mechanically govern the generator’s rotational speed.

While in operation, oil will be pumped away from the IDG toward the external cooling unit. Entering a pressure fill port, the oil is passed through a filter before exiting the cooling circuit to flow into the cooler. From there, the oil is cooled to a lower temperature before being sent back on the same path to return to the IDG. While the IDG is driven by an external engine accessory gearbox, its overall performance and reliability are determined by the quantity, quality, and cleanliness of the oil.

As oil quantity is crucial for proper lubrication and cooling, a sight glass is typically provided for monitoring levels. The sight glass is a tube-shaped level sensor and indicator, and its transparency allows one to quickly obtain visual references on oil levels. As for the cleanliness of oil, the standard procedures, and tests that one should carry out will often vary based on the system itself. To ensure that you follow the correct practices for maintaining an IDG, always refer to the maintenance manual of the aircraft in question.

Oil cleanliness is paramount for optimal functionality and the service lives of various components. If oil becomes contaminated, it can eventually cause the filter to fail, leading to excessive wear and tear that increases the chance of the system overheating. Alongside the IDG itself, any cans, tools, or other accessories that are used around the system should also be well cleaned and stored for further contamination prevention. During each servicing, a new oil can should always be used.

When it comes time to service the IDG, it is important that workers remain cognizant of the potential heat of components that were only recently shut down. For ample protection, workers should utilize safety goggles, insulated globes, and protective clothing. Through proper adherence to safety standards and efficient maintenance procedures, one can ensure that their IDG continues to perform well.
